On Tuesday 6th June, guests gathered for networking and a light lunch at ‘The Kitchen’ on Pioneer’s Edinburgh Technopole – the recently opened cafe is exclusive to tenant occupiers and others who work ‘in the zone’ so this was an opportunity to try out the tasty offering at the latest catering venue ‘in the zone’ at a central meeting point.

Following general introductions and catch up with regular attendees and some new faces, Sharon McCluskie, Administration Manager, provided us some background about EPP.

The company is an award winning GLP Contract Research Organisation established in 1992 by Dr Stephen Newlands, originally an industrial research chemist with BP and thereafter a pharmaceutical research and development chemist with a Glaxo subsidiary (Macfarlan Smith Ltd) in Edinburgh.

Stephen was Managing and Scientific Director until his retirement in July 2022, and EPP has since been managed by his wife Rosie Newlands.

This established business supports agrochemical, pharmaceutical and industrial chemical sectors specialising in, Analytical and screening including 5–Batch analysis and Physio-chemical testing, Custom Synthesis, REACH* and Process R & D. They pride themselves on their responsive and agile timelines to meet the requirements of their clients in the UK and across the world.

Following the introduction to EPP Ltd, our group enjoyed a short walk in the sunshine across the parkland of the Bush estate to EPP’s bespoke Environmental Centre for a tour – grounds and laboratories.

We had a chance to view their impressive suite of laboratories equipped with the latest technology and facilities, whilst members of the analytical and research teams conducted their work in a secure and pristine environment.

Areas of the interior are currently being adapted and remodelled to accomodate additional R&D space, as well as meeting space.

The outdoor space is not overlooked, and the natural environment combines manicured lawns with wildflower habitats to attract pollinators and a pond with a resident heron!

As well as offering bespoke services for clients EPP have an impressive product catalogue of over 700 analytical reference standards which can be despatched worldwide from their premises in the Midlothian Science Zone.
