From placement to permanent

University of York student, Abbie Smith was chosen in spring 2016 to join EPP’s analytical team as part of her industrial placement, funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry. We are delighted to announce that following her successful year and graduation from York University, Abbie will become a permanent member of staff at EPP.

Abbie must be congratulated on her hard work and dedication throughout the year, coping with the stresses of moving to a new city and her enthusiasm when tasked with challenging work-based projects. This was Abbie’s final year of her integrated masters (MChem) and her dissertation was to be based upon work undertaken within the GLP lab. Abbie notes ‘It definitely opened my eyes to the wide range of chemical testing required for agrochemicals and the amount of different regulations associated with the industry.’

Valuable industrial experience was gained within the year, from HPLC to GC to Ion Chromatography. Initially, Abbie had applied for large companies, however she mentioned that ‘Being part of a small company is great, the team is very friendly and approachable’.

Abbie’s dissertation was on the ‘Detection and Quantification of Pesticides’, which helped her achieve a high 2:1 (Hons) when she graduated this month. All at EPP absolutely delighted for her and she is an excellent permanent addition as an analyst to the analytical department.
